A narrative analysis of LGB individuals'' life changes around coming out in family
作者 張竹芩
中文摘要
英文摘要

This narrative analysis of 25 closeted Taiwanese LGB individuals’ life narratives is guided by sensemaking theory (Weick, 1995). For LGB individuals who are closeted from their family, ambiguity, uncertainty, and changes are especially salient because they need to manage the closeted status while maintain their family relationships. The in-depth interviews were analyzed following McCormack (1999)’s narrative analysis model, and arrived at three narratives: “It’s all good like this now”, “I might come out soon”, and “Finally.” The narrative analysis shows that stability is the most salient theme in all narrative, and participants did not necessarily think coming out is prerequisite to having a good life. This study aims to add to the critical voice in interpersonal communication that questions the ideology of openness, and argues that concealment could be functional and desirable.
