2019 Annual Conference of the Chinese Communication Society
“Dialectic, Contradictions, and Reflection in the Post-Truth Era”
Media continues to evolve and new communications technologies and industries pose various challenges and opportunities that are of interest to academia and industry. Because of media convergence, old and new media have become merged with diverse types of media, transgressing the established media borders. Numerous technology, information, and society-related disciplines have developed a communications-based research perspective, implying the profound and pervasive influence of communications and indirectly revealing the diversity and richness of communications research.
Media convergence has enabled rapid communications. Communications platforms have also enabled users to become highly active and influential. However, negative as well as positive phenomena have resulted from these developments with effects on industry, government, and academia. The broad perspectives of politics, sociology, and economics should be integrated into academia and used to reflect upon such problems, and the individual-scale thoughts and emotions of media creators and viewers must also be studied. Social media has become interwoven into our daily lives, and news and messages are disseminated through social networking platforms such as Line, WeChat, and Messenger and delivered through Facebook live streams and YouTube by Internet celebrities. These online platforms gave rise to the fake news phenomenon, which has become characteristic of this post-truth era. Because it disturbs the news market and undermines public opinions, fake news is a topic that demands the attention of contemporary society.
The 2019 annual conference is centered on the topic of competing truths and reflection in the post-truth era. Scholars from the communications field are welcomed to participate in the conference and highlight their cutting-edge communications studies, which we hope will provoke reflection on specific cases. The conference encourages interested scholars to conduct communication-related interdisciplinary studies, which will demonstrate how cooperation and exchanges between communications and other domains can be harnessed to explore the roles, processes, and challenges of communications in various disciplines.
